October 2006 Theme ~ "The Storm"
Life is full of all kinds of storms, sometimes due to the weather,
and sometimes due to more personal matters.
This month our assignment was to write a poem
for which the title might be "The Storm".
Congratulations to our October winners!
The Storms of Life
Throughout your life, the rain will fall
Storms and tornadoes, hurricanes and squalls
The darkness so thick you can barely see
Weak and weary, you end up on your knees
Anxiety and despair your only friends
Day after day, never reaching an end
You reach that point of no return
With no going back, all your bridges burned
Take heart and listen, there is a way
To make it through your darkest of days
He's waiting for you, He's by your side,
He'll carry you through life's highest tides
So close your eyes, and speak to Him,
With God on your side, I promise, you'll win.

A Violent Storm
Broken hearts in broken hands
heartache deep within
A single touch upon my face
the bruise beneath my skin.
The whisper of a breathless kiss
refreshing to my soul
The peace I find so comforting
is not mine to control.
A silent stillness embraces me
the calm before the storm
Reflections of what is to come;
it always has before.
And then a tempest so intense
blackening the skies
Assaults me with a forcefulness
that's written in your eyes.
Then all at once it disappears
and a stillness settles in,
But the storm that has become our lives
I know will return again.

The Storm
The silence was deafening
The clouds were dark
Spiraling winds
Were leaving their mark.
Flashes of lightning
Filled up the sky
The boom of thunder
Sounding close by.
The pounding rain
Turning into hail
As this fierce storm
Raged on to no prevail.
Rush of adrenaline
Mixed with curiosity and fear
Wanting to run
But frozen right here.
Amazed by its beauty
Devastated by its wrath
Fueled by Mother Nature
Stay out of its path.

The Storm
Sand and grit sting the eye
Around the soldier it does fly
Fighting enemies day by day
This is what they did say
Yet there was more to the job than that
Thought the soldier gripping his hat
He had known it would not be bliss
As he gave his wife that goodbye kiss
Protecting his eyes with a dusty brown hand
Observing the area under his command
So many press forward to help and to learn
While yet others sneak around seeking things to burn
Knowing which one is which can be so hard
A soldier's view of the world permanently marred
Emotions pulling the heart this way and that
Moving around never sure where to hang his hat
Yet standing proud his job never shirking
He continues ever strong, always working.
Even these moments when the dust seems alive
Or when to dodge bullets he must for cover dive.

After the Storm
Ocean waves' crest
Tumble into foam
Clothing a barren verge
With sea skin fabrics
Inlaid with white quartz veins
They crawl on crystals of sand
Washing the granular edges
With particles of grit and salt
Wet hemline watermarks overlap
Forming sleek capsules of water
That break into the surface
In subtle madness and grace
White ash circles the embers
Of a receding liquid pool
Where the meeting ends
To be swallowed by sea
