November 2006 Theme ~ "Fences"

There are all kinds of fences in life. Some fences may divide us from something or someone, while other fences may hold us back or keep us together.

Our November theme assignment was to write a poem about "Fences".

Congratulations to our November winners!

The Fence

Across the fence is a beautiful place
A place I would love to go

There are no tears, no sorrow there
Only joy and peace are known

Many a loved one has crossed that fence
When their time on this earth is done

I can see their smiling faces now
Their halos as bright as the sun

There was suffering on this side of the fence
But there all the suffering is done

For across the fence is a heavenly place
Where the Father welcomes them home

And one day soon when your time here is done
And you're tired and weary and weak

You'll cross the fence, your burdens laid down
For your journey is now complete

With a crown of gold upon your head
You'll be wearing a robe of white

The angels will sing their welcoming song
As your loved ones hold you tight

The Fence

The fence which surrounds me
Though not very tall,
Has a way of protecting me
With no trouble at all.

Though short and slotted
And painted in white
If trouble comes near me
It puts up a fight.

Wherever I go and whatever I do,
The fence is always with me, I find.
Though I ponder the whys and hows
The fence, you see, is my mind.

Rabbit Proof Fence

Sixteen hundred miles is a long way home
But three young girls from Jigalong once journeyed it alone
With no maps to guide them across the rough terrain
On the run from white fellas to make it home again

Amidst the harsh conditions the dry and dusty heat
Along the fence they found their strength despite their bloodied feet,
'Twas man's battle with nature this landmark in its time
As on this path the fence became their hope and one lifeline.

A long and painful journey but never losing sight
Of their destination amidst this heartfelt plight,
Stolen from their families then imprisoned far away
The young girls clutched the wire fence as they made their escape.

Shrouded in our history that 1600 mile fence
Tells the tale of these three girls in every circumstance -
Molly, Daisy, Gracie - though half-castes they were known
Defied the odds, followed the fence and soon found their way home.

Fenced

If the seagulls can reach the pinnacle of the skies,
then why can't I reach you?
You're not too high nor so low
Yet I just can't stretch out my hands to reach for you

If a mother can touch her newborn child,
then why can't I touch you?
You're not so far away I know
But there's a certain distance between me and you

If the breeze can caress and kiss the petals of a rose,
then why can't I do the same with you?
You're just there, so close...so near
Yet all I can do is express it through a stare

And if a writer can express his feelings through inscribing words,
then why can't I say a word or two about the warm affection I've always felt for you?
All I can say is a mere "hello"
But I can't utter the words "I love you"
